Josiah Henson was known for his physical presence and mental capabilities; from the auction block to his persistent and daring quest for freedom and beyond. His contributions to Canadian culture made it possible for many like our storyteller, Cassel, to live freely in Canada.
Recently seen on stage at the Alumnae Theatre in Toronto (Feb 2025), and in Ottawa at The Gladstone Theatre (August 2025), Josiah has gained newfound life and played to glorious feedback and reviews from fans not only of the show or Cassel Miles, but also those familiar with the story of Josiah Henson. This remounted show, produced by Miles and Sandy McFadden of Thousand Miles of Bricks Productions, will leave you moved when you hear this powerful tale from enslavement to freedom.
Josiah was originally co-created by Cassel Miles and Charles Robertson, and written by Charles Robertson.

One man. One Stage. One Powerful Story.
From Cassel Miles:
For over twenty years I have been thinking about Josiah's story. There was, and continues to be, a deeply felt calling to share his story with all Canadians and the world. Since December 2018 I have been working on this play with co-creator and writer, Charles Robertson. It has been produced in earlier iterations at The Grand Theatre in Kingston, The Red Sandcastle Theatre in Toronto, and as part of Theatre Orangeville's 2021 'COVID Season'. This remount is a new collaboration with direction by Jim Garrard. It continues my mission to let the world know who Josiah Henson was and how he became the first African-Canadian to have his visage on a Canadian postage stamp. This is a Canadian hero of whom ALL Canadians should be aware.
