About The Show

Introduction

He was known for his physical presence and mental capabilities; from the auction block to his persistent and daring quest for freedom and beyond. His contributions to Canadian culture made it possible for many like our storyteller, Cassel, to live freely in Canada.

From Cassel Miles

I first became aware of Josiah Henson's story in 2004 and, immediately, it resonated within my soul. His story captured my attention; touched my heart. His indomitable character. His determination to always be the best. His fortitude and optimism in the face of brutality and degradation, his desire to care for and uplift others. Who was this man? How was he able to endure and surmount the trials that conspired to sublimate his spirit? How had I gone through the entire Canadian school system yet never heard of him before 2004? How could I share his story with other Canadians who may not have heard of him? Following his lead, how could I be like Josiah?

Getting to Today

For over twenty years I have been thinking about Josiah's story. There was, and continues to be, a deeply felt calling to share his story with all Canadians and the world. Since December 2018 I have been working on this play with co-creator and writer, Charles Robertson. It has been produced in earlier iterations at The Grand Theatre in Kingston, The Red Sandcastle Theatre in Toronto, and as part of Theatre Orangeville's 2021 'COVID Season'. This remount is a new collaboration with direction by Jim Garrard. It continues my mission to let the world know who Josiah Henson was and how he became the first African-Canadian to have his visage on a Canadian postage stamp. This is a Canadian hero of whom ALL Canadians should be aware.

JOSIAH now had a fully dedicated production team. It played, successfully, at the Alumnae Theatre in Toronto for Black History Month 2025. We are just getting started. This is the time of JOSIAH.

The work is the play. The play is to inspire.

Help Tell His Story

In these particularly tumultuous times, this is a story that models hope for a way of living through integrity, perseverance, and the uplifting of others. We are dedicated to giving this story the life it deserves. Won't you please visit our Go Fund Me page to learn more about how you can help and donate to support Josiah and our team? We would be most appreciative. Thank you from all of us.
